Plaster of Paris molds are made from plaster of Paris which is derived from gypsum rock. This material easily changes from a solid to a powder and back to solid form again just by adding water. Plaster of Paris is frequently used in arts and crafts courses because the material is readily shaped into different designs.

Making plaster of Paris molds requires you to first mix the plaster according to the directions given on the manufacturer’s label. Get ready a water tight container for you to pour your plaster of Paris into. You can also use hard plastic containers or ones made from stainless steel or tin. The container should not leak any of the plaster of Paris and should keep its shape.

Your mixture of plaster of Paris should not be too thick. Otherwise the plaster of Paris molds will harden before you have the opportunity to craft the mold. If the mixture is too thin, the mold will take a long time to dry. The end result would also be powdery.

When you’re satisfied with the consistency of your plaster of Paris, pour it into the containers that you have prepared. Be sure to pour it slowly so that there are no air bubbles. The formation of air bubbles will affect the smoothness of the plaster of Paris molds you make.

Now push an object into the plaster to create plaster of Paris molds. Be sure that the plaster gets into all the sections of the object. When the mold is set, remove it gently with oil or petroleum jelly.
