The only place where the term French dressing is surprisingly not used is in France where salad dressing is simply referred to as a vinaigrette.

In the 1880’s the US and UK regions started using the term French dressing to describe vinaigrettes as salads became popular and then many varieties of the condiment emerged. The recorded appearance of French dressing in American menus was noted as far back as 1899 and new variations continuously emerge.

In UK zesty French dressing ingredients are more varied than the US and include olive oil, white wine vinegar or red wine vinegar along with lemon juice as a base. Other ingredients can include garlic and mustard along with seasonings of salt and pepper. Of course there are many commercial varieties that companies market and all of them include a variety of zesty French dressing ingredients which cater to different tastes.

Zesty French Dressing Ingredients American Vinaigrette

In the US the zesty French dressing ingredients turn the dressing into a reddish orange color and it is never pale white or bright and deep red. This is a pureed and uniform sauce that has a tangy sweet flavor. There are no pieces of herbs and spices floating in the smooth puree. The US vinaigrette includes ingredients like vinegar, ketchup, any vegetable oil, tomato puree, paprika, water, spices and sugar or honey which are all blended to a smooth and viscous paste.

French Dressing Recipe 1

In order to make this dressing you will require 2 teaspoons salt, 1/2 teaspoon pepper, 1 teaspoon dry mustard, dash ground cayenne, 1/3 cup chili sauce, 1 teaspoon paprika, 1/2 cup fresh lemon juice, 1 1/2 cups olive oil, 4 garlic cloves, halved and 2 or 3 teaspoons horseradish, if desired.

Mix all ingredients in a large jar and cover and shake until well blended. Store in refrigerator till serving time and shake well before serving. This recipe makes two cups of French dressing.

French dressing recipe – 2

This recipe requires 1 clove halved garlic, 3/4 cup oil, 3/4 teaspoon salt, 1/4 teaspoon paprika, 1/4 teaspoon dry mustard, 1/4 teaspoon pepper, 1/4 cup lemon juice and 1 tablespoon sugar.

Place the ingredients in a jar with a screw-top lid, cover tightly and shake the jar vigorously to blend the dressing. Chill for 8 hours or more and discard garlic clove before serving and shake well before you serve it.

French Dressing Recipe – 3

For this dressing recipe you will need 1 tablespoon sugar, 3/4 teaspoon salt, 1/4 cup sour cream, 3/4 cup olive oil, 1/4 cup lemon juice, 1/4 teaspoon paprika, 1/4 teaspoon dry mustard and about 1/4 teaspoon pepper. Pour the ingredients in a jar with a tight lid. Screw the lid tightly and shake vigorously to blend well. Place it in the fridge till serving time and shake before serving.
