Camping in Hungary

Are you going on holiday to Hungary? Would you like to do some camping in Hungary? Our camping guide to Hungary gives you the facts & information you’ll want to know.

Campsites in Hungary

Although Hungary is only an average sized European country, it incorporates within its border a multitude of different landscapes and terrains. This, in conjunction with the relatively mild climate in Hungary, pleasant summers and central European location make it a popular holiday destination with campers from all over Europe.  Hungary is well equipped to receive campers as it has more than 400 official campsites.

Best campsites in Hungary

The best campsites in Hungary really depend on what sort of camping experience you are after. In general, however, it should be noted that some of the larger campsites can get rather crowded and noisy which detracts from the feeling of being in the natural environment of Hungary which is what many campers are looking for. If you value peace and quiet while camping, then try to stick to smaller campsites, although these often have less by way of campsite facilities such as hot water and showers.

Campsites at Lake Balaton

Lake Balaton is probably the premier camping destination in Hungary. With its wonderfully clear water which is warm enough to swim in, and the scenic surroundings of the forests, many Hungarians and foreigners choose to camp at Lake Balaton. It is for this reason that campsites on the shores of Lake Balaton tend to be among the most expensive in Hungary. Lake Balaton is also one of the more pleasant places to go cycling in Hungary.

Camping season in Hungary

Camping season in Hungary generally starts from May and peaks in the summer months before ending in September.  There are, however, several campsites that stay open until the end of October and even open as early as April. Of course, the warmest months of July and particularly August are especially busy for campsites, so it’s a good idea to call ahead and check for vacancies in order to avoid disappointment. This is particularly important if you intend to rent accommodation at a campsite such as a bungalow, which is only available at some of the more developed campsites.

Camping discounts in Hungary

Holders of an international camping card are automatically entitled to a 10% discount at all official campsites throughout Hungary. Simply inform the supervisor when arriving to make sure.

Unauthorised Camping

Any form of unauthorised camping is strictly forbidden in Hungary. Even if the police don’t catch you, any local who does spot you is likely to inform the authorities.
