The country of Japan is known for its rich art history that stretches over hundreds of years. Over the years the Japanese have maintained their traditional styles while incorporating foreign influences within their own framework. Japanese art is found in a diverse range of mediums showcasing the aesthetic sense and craftsmanship if it’s people.

From beautiful paintings to exquisite pottery and from the artistic sculptures to the unique art of flower arrangement known as Ikebana you will find that the Japanese artists have expressed themselves through a wide range of mediums. Another unique form of art from Japan is that of Origami which involves folding paper in order to create designs. The Japanese are also known for their tattoo designs which have now spread all over the world.

Japanese Paintings

When it comes to Japanese paintings we find them to be in a league of their own. The paintings from Japan are the oldest dated art pieces that have been found from the country. On observation it is revealed that the art of painting in Japan envelopes a wide range of styles including those that cropped up as a result of foreign influences.

Japanese art forms had different influences during changing times. The Nara period for example is known for beautiful murals. These could be seen on temple walls and other places of worship. The Chinese influence is quite prominent in the traditional Japanese art of that time.

Ink painting is also a major part of the traditional Japanese art. An overwhelming amount of Monochrome landscape paintings can also be found from Japan. Abstract art has always been and still is a prominent part of the Japanese culture.

Japanese Pottery

Japanese pottery is also something that is highly revered on a global scale. The Buddhist years of Japan inspired the artists to produce many beautiful sculptures on the theme. Through the changing years the sculptors used different metals, wood and clay.

In the more recent years sculptures became a prominent feature of Japanese art. Even today we find many outdoor sculptures in the various cities of Japan especially in parks where they are used as part of the landscape design. The Japanese also made use of natural materials for the purpose of creating sculptures.

There are certain art forms that are only to be found in Japan. For example the art form known as Bonsai is a product of the country. This unique art form is about growing miniature plants. Ikebana as mentioned earlier is another trademark art form of Japan along with the art of folding paper known as origami.

The Japanese people have also been very fond of poetry and of course martial arts is also a prominent part of the Japanese culture. Japanese woodblock paintings known as Ukiyo-e are also part of the traditional arts from Japan. Another unique art is that of preparing and serving tea which is known as the Japanese tea ceremony and it is taken very seriously on the local level.
