Japanese Garden Bridge

The Japanese garden bridge is an integral part of a Japanese garden. Find out about the different styles available…

The use of garden bridges in Japanese style gardens is somewhat different to how they are conventionally used in the west. Whereas the main purpose of a garden bridge is to allow one to cross over a narrow body of water in a Japanese garden the bridge may stretch over an actual stream. The Japanese garden bridge gives a feeling of transition within the landscape.

Covered Japanese Bridge

There are a number of different kinds of Japanese garden bridges that have been developed and used over the years. The most common amongst them is the covered Japanese garden bridge. This kind of a bridge beautifully brings together the aspects of form and function.

The covered bridge gives a special view over the water body plus shelter from the sun on hot sunny days. Hence you can sit over the water body under the shade of the covered Japanese garden bridge and enjoy the environment.

The only thing that one needs to ensure is that the architectural lines and building material of the roof blend in with the rest of the garden and its components. This should be done in order to maintain the harmony that is the very essence of a Japanese garden.

Japanese moon bridge

Another popular variation is the moon bridge also known as the drum bridge. These bridges basically feature high arcs that can actually appear to give the illusion of being a complete circle from a distance. In fact when you consider the reflection cast by the large arcs in the water below they do form a complete circle.

One of the most inviting variations in Japanese garden bridges is the strolling pond bridge. This bridge is specifically built for those gardens that sport a large pond. Such bridges tend to have a lot of curves as they give the visitor a complete tour over the surface of the pond beckoning him to explore the surroundings. The reflection in the water body below exaggerates the curves on the strolling pond bridge to add to its aesthetic brilliance.

The log bridge is one of the classic Japanese garden bridge styles. Since the Japanese style revolves around the use of natural material the log bridge is very oriental in its essence. Such bridges are tucked over natural woodland garden streams and guide the visitors as they pass through.

The log bridge is pre-treated so as to prevent them from rotting in the damp environment. Although the classic log bridge gives a great feel to the Japanese garden it requires regular maintenance especially in the hot months.

The stone slab bridge is another version amongst the many Japanese garden bridges and this one requires very little almost no maintenance at all. It is a simple quarried cut slice of granite that is made to lie down over a narrow stream. The edges are reinforced so as to provide stability and prevent erosion.

The most elaborate Japanese garden bridge is without a doubt the eight fold bridge. This expansive bridge makes sure you take your time observing and enjoying the Japanese garden as you make your way across this bridge.
