Best Time To Visit Machu Picchu And Galapagos

In order to make the most of your trip to Machu Picchu and Galapagos, it is important to identify the best time of the year, based on their location and weather conditions. Read our guide for more facts and information…

Peru encompasses vast areas of desert coastline on the South Pacific Ocean, the soaring Andes Mountains and the Amazon jungles. Galapagos, on the other hand, is a small archipelago located at a distance of about 500 miles from Ecuador, off the Pacific Coast. However, their proximity to each other allows tourists to explore them in one trip.  The practical considerations that help determine the right time to visit the two destinations are discussed below.

Weather in Machu Picchu

The dry season in the areas surrounding the ruins, including the Inca Trail and Sacred Valley, runs from April to early November. The rainy season is around November through March. During the wettest time, i.e. from January to March, trekking tours do not take place. The temperature ranges from 60-65oF during the day and remain around 30oF during the night.

Weather in the Galapagos Islands

The islands have agreeable temperatures round the year, lying between 70 and 80oF. The hot season is from December to May and the cold season is from June to November. During the warmer months, the skies are usually clear with intermittent rain. A kind of mist called ‘gaura’ appears during May-December, along with a slight disturbance in the ocean. But, it seldom gets rough and hence, Galapagos can be visited any time of the year.

Location of Machu Picchu and Galapagos

Though both Machu Picchu and Galapagos are located on the equator with good weather round the year, the location of Machu Picchu on Peru’s tropical mountain forest and the presence of a rainy season make it important to determine the best time to visit the two South American spots on a single trip. Machu Picchu is at a higher altitude, meaning that it has lower temperatures. On the other hand, the lower elevation of Galapagos allows for year-round sunshine and favorable temperatures.

Other considerations

You also have to determine your interests, such as trekking on the Inca Trail or snorkeling in Galapagos. You may find cheaper prices during the off-season.

The best time to visit Machu Picchu and Galapagos in one trip

Dry weather allows for better sightseeing in Machu Picchu and its surrounding highlands. Galapagos is good throughout the year, but the May-June and November-December periods are the best seasons.

Therefore, Mid-April through May is considered the best time to visit them in one trip, while September through mid-October can also be favorable.
