Menorca is an island in Spain that forms part of the Balearic Islands. The Balearics are a very popular tourist destination in Spain, although Menorca is one of the quietest and most under developed of Spain’s islands.

Menorca is the northern most of the Balearic Islands in Spain and compared to Ibiza and Mallorca it is wetter and cooler. Menorca is also one of the least populated Islands in Spain with a total population of less that 100,000 people.

Menorca National Park in Spain

The comparatively cooler and rainier climate in Menorca provides this island with some of its most unique and prized features. The landscape in some parts of Menorca can best be described as green wetlands rich in plant and wildlife.

This has led to the government of Spain declaring part of Menorca to be a national park on which building development is banned. The National Park in Menorca, known as the S’Albufera d’es Grau Park is a great place to come to see some rare species of animals and birds.

Bird watchers from all over Spain travel to Menorca to catch a glimpse of several bird species that are hard to spot elsewhere in Spain.  Visitors to this national park in Menorca will also want to stop by the fresh water lagoon and enjoy the tranquillity of Menorca at its fullest.

Shopping in Menorca in Spain

Menorca isn’t known for its shopping although there are a couple of places in Menorca you can go to for clothing and souvenirs.  The main town in Menorca is Mao and every Saturday it plays host to a market with dozens of stalls selling clothing and traditional arts and crafts produced in Menorca or elsewhere in Spain.

Menorca Museum in Spain

Menorca Museum is a good place to spend a couple of hours, especially on Sundays when admission to this museum in Menorca in free. The Menorca Museum is housed in a 15th century Christian monastery and the Museum itself covers the long history of Menorca from Roman times to Muslim Menorca and more recent eras including a period of British rule.
