Phi Phi Island is a small Island situated on the coast of the Andaman Sea in south west Thailand.  Phi Phi Island is about 100 miles south of Phuket and it is from here that most visitors to Phi Phi come from. Although heavily devastated by the Boxing Day Tsunami of 2004, Phi Phi Island has gradually rebuilt it’s tourist infrastructure and is once again a popular day trip destination for tourists staying in nearby tourist centres in southern Thailand.

Getting to Phi Phi Island

Phi Phi Island is best visited as a day trip from either nearby Krabi Island or Phuket. A boat trip from Krabi takes about one hour and costs 300 Baht while a ferry from Phuket costs 500 Baht and takes approximately two hours.

Beaches on Phi Phi Island

Although very small, Phi Phi has a couple of beautiful beaches. In Fact Phi Phi Island is the location where the 2000 cult classic movie The Beach, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, was filmed.

Although visits to the exact spot where the film was shot can be arranged, the majority of people visiting Phi who want to enjoy a good beach visit Tonsai Bay. Tonsai Bay is the main beach on Phi Phi Island that runs across the middle of the island and is a particularly popular place for sunbathing.

Phi Phi Lei Island

Phi Phi Island actually consists of two islands; The main island known as Phi Phi and a smaller island called Phi Phi Lei Island. Phi Phi Lei is technically protected as a natural park which means no building on it; however, it can still be visited as part of a day trip. The main draw here is the spectacular greenery and wildlife.

Exploring Phi Phi Island

One of the most popular things to do on a day trip to Phi Phi Island is to hire a long tail water boat and go exploring the many coves and secluded bays that exist all around the Island. A typical boat trip takes a couple of hours and will cost a few hundred Baht.

An alternative way to explore Phi Phi Island is to rent a kayak and go exploring by yourself, although you’re slightly more limited in terms of what you can see in the same amount of time.

Hiking on Phi Phi Island

Phi Phi Island has two high points on either side of the Island that are connected by a thin strip of low lying land that includes the beaches. Hiking up to the top of either of these two high points is a popular activity and a great way to obtain a view of the entire island and the surrounding seas.
