Things to do in Bodrum

Bodrum is a small seaside town located in the south west of Turkey. The population of Bodrum is 50,000. Bodrum is a holiday resort town with a harbour from which you can catch a ferry to the Greek islands of Kos. Bodrum also has a yacht harbour where you can rent a yacht for a day’s sailing. Because it is located on the coast of the Aegean Sea water sports are very popular for holiday makers in Bodrum and some of the main activities include swimming, snorkelling and scuba diving in addition to boating. Most tourists in Bodrum spend their days involved in water sports. At night the town of Bodrum comes to life with several bars and discos open until early in the morning. This can be a distraction if you’re staying a Bodrum hotel close to a disco as the sound will keep you up. Although Bodrum is mainly a tourist town there is a small fishing industry as well as an annual harvest of tangerines which means you can get fresh sea food at the restaurants in Bodrum.

The Mausoleum of Bodrum

Perhaps the most significant historical site in Bodrum is the mausoleum of King Mausolous who ruled the city state of Bodrum until his death in 353 BC. Unfortunately the famous mausoleum of Bodrum no longer exists. The mausoleum of Bodrum was dismantled and used for re-enforcing the base of Christian crusaders from the Knights Hospitalers who had been staying in that area feared attack from Muslims. It is believed that when intact the mausoleum of Bodrum was one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. There is still a museum in Bodrum dedicated to the mausoleum which opens daily between 8am and 6pm. The museum in Bodrum explains the history behind the mausoleum and includes several galleries and old documents with explanations in English and Turkish. There are also some pleasant and shady gardens at the Bodrum museum.
