American Girl Addy is an 18” doll that was introduced in 1993 by the American Girl company that produces a line of dolls and accessories depicting young, pre-teen girls from historic periods. The doll’s full name is Addy Walker and is a 10-year-old historical character from 1864. Addy was developed to provide a young child’s perspective of events from this important period in American history.

Addy is the American Girl’s first, and only, African American doll. It was the first non-white doll and also the fist doll to feature ear-rings. The doll’s skin colour is dark, with dark brown and textured black hair with ethnically appropriate features. She is a fugitive slave who escaped with her mother from North Carolina to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to look for her father and brother who have been sold by their master. They leave Addy’s baby sister behind, fearful that the baby’s cries could alert slave catchers.

Addy’s story focuses on her courage, strength and dreams of freedom in the midst of the American Civil War. Her dreams are tempered with the realisation that she has to begin from the bottom and face stiff prejudice and racism. Addy is dressed in a pleated, striped dress of cinnamon pink with cotton drawers, black socks and cap toe shoes. She wears hoop earrings and her hair is tied in a silky blue ribbon. Addy’s body is made from soft cloth and the movable head and limbs are vinyl.

There are six beautifully illustrated books in the Addy series beginning with ‘Meet Addy’ which introduces young owners to the historical background of the girl. She has a fifteen year old brother called Sam and a one year old sister called Esther. Felicity’s story was written into a play called “Addy: An American Girl Story” and taken on limited national tour from January 2008 to May 2008 through Kids Entertainment, Inc.
