American Girl Julie is an 18” historical doll that was released on September 10, 2007 by the American Girl company that produces a line of dolls and accessories depicting young, pre-teen girls from historic periods. The doll’s full name is Julie Albright and is a 10-year-old historical character from 1974. Julie was developed to provide a young child’s perspective of events from this important period in American history.

Julie has very long straight blonde hair with a single braid. She is a fun-loving girl from San Francisco who is moving to a new house and school following the divorce of her parents. Her story revolves around gender equality in school sports, saving endangered species like the bald eagle and America’s Bicentennial celebrations.

Julie is dressed in a pleasant blouse over a long sleeved turtle-neck. Her two tone blue bell bottom pants is paired with platform sandals and a beaded, braided belt. American Girl Julie’s body is made from soft cloth and the movable head and limbs are vinyl.

There are six beautifully illustrated books in the Julie series beginning with ‘Meet Julie’ which introduces young owners to the historical background of the girl’s life during September 1975 – 1976. Julie’s father is an airline pilot who flies all around the world and whom she visits in the weekends. The girl’s mother is artistic and runs a small store. Julie has a sister, Tracy, who is fifteen and her best friend is Ivy Ling, a gymnast.

American Girl Julie has her own computer game: Julie Saves the Eagles as well as her own Nintendo DS game, Julie Finds a Way.

Origins of the Name Julie

The name Julie originated from France. It is a diminutive form of the Latin name Julia that means ‘youthful’ or ‘Jove’s child’. The name was imported to America from France in the 1920’s. Several famous Hollywood actresses bear the name such as Julie Andrews and Julie Walters. Julie was the 10th most popular name in the United States in 2007 when American Girl Julie was introduced.

American Girl Julie is an attractive doll whose story encourages young girls to be responsible and adapt to change. Julie’s story stresses that girls should be independent and have strong faith in themselves.
