Sitting below the Parana and Paraguay Rivers, Corrientes is one of Argentina’s oldest cities. Corrientes is the capital city of the province of Corrientes and is about 1,000 km from Buenos Aires. Its population is approximately 328,000.

The city has bags of character with colourful streets, colonial and modern architecture, several churches, fruit trees and the now re-energised Carnival Correntino. The most attractive area of the city is the Parque Mitre and the nice riverside along Av Costanera San Martin. Many people congregate on the riverbank late in the day for a drink and a chat.

There is a tourist information office in Corrientes on 25 de Mayo 1330 and also in Plaza Cabral. Places of interest include the Covento de san Francisco which is now  a museum. On the east side of San Juan is an attractive area that also holds the Monumento a la Gloria which honours the Italian community. The Santuario de la Cruz del Milagro has a 16th century cross which apparently defied efforts by indigenous people to burn it. The Museo Historico de Corrientes houses weapons, coins, furniture and other pieces from the past.

To travel to Corrientes you are more than likely going to be using the local bus station at Av Costanera General San Martin. There you can catch a bus to/from Resistencia, Posadas, Buenos Aires and Asuncion.

In this part of Argentina the climate is mild and the temperature is high with a limited annual variation and a low daily oscillation due to the high humidity, being the average registered temperature 20ºC.
