Argentina is officially known as the Argentine Republic or Nación Argentina (Argentine Nation). It is located in the southern hemisphere in the continent of South America. It shares borders with Paraguay and Bolivia in the north, Brazil and Uruguay in the northeast, and Chile in the west and south. The country claims the British controlled territories of the Falkland Islands (known to the Argentines as “Islas Malvinas”) and South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands. Under the name of Argentine Antarctica, it claims 969,464 km² (374,312 sq mi) of Antarctica, overlapping other claims made by Chile and the United Kingdom.

The Geography of Argentina

Sitting in the southern hemisphere, Argentina is around 3,700 km long from north to south, and 1,400 km from east to west. People often divide the country into four parts as follows:

1) Pampas – The plains west and south from Buenos Aires contains rich and fertile land, the source of Argentina’s agricultural wealth.
2) Patagonia – In the southern half down to Tierra del Fuego. Most of the region is semi-arid in the north to cold and arid in the far south, but forests grow in its western fringes which are dotted with several large lakes
3) Gran Chaco – The subtropical flats of the Gran Chaco are located in the north of Argentina. The region is seasonal dry/wet, mainly cotton growing and livestock raising.
4) Andes Mountains – The rugged mountains along the western border with Chile.

Highest and Lowest Points

Argentina’shighest point above sea level is located in Mendoza. The mountain of Cerro Aconcagua stands at 6,962 meters (22,834 feet) high.

The lowest point is Laguna del Carbón in Santa Cruz, −105 meters (−344 ft) below sea level. This is also the lowest point on the South American continent.
