The Havanese is a bichon type dog, and has its origins as far back as the ancient Greeks. The Havanese dog breed is the national dog of Cuba. It came to Cuba with the Spanish explorers in the early 1500’s. They were an automatic hit with the social elite of the country and remained so until the early 1900’s when American influences took over, and the Cuban elite wanted dogs that were more popular in the U.S. At this point, the Havanese became more popular with the ordinary class Cubans and became a much loved house pet. They became popular in the U.S. in the 1970’s when an influx of Cuban immigrants escaping the Communist regime of Cuba entered the country bringing their love for the breed with them.

Description

Havanese are classified as toy dogs. They are usually between eight and eleven inches tall and just a little longer than its height. The puppies will grow to an average weight of between seven to thirteen pounds.

The coat of the Havanese dog is long and silky. It is also rather fluffy, a characteristic that helped to provide relief from the tropical climate of Cuba. The original Havanese dogs were white in color, but as time has gone on, there are now many different colors. Common colors now vary from silver, white, cream, brown and black. The eyes are usually dark brown or black, but in the case of the chocolate colored dog, the eyes may be lighter.

Although the Havanese dogs are almost always long haired, there is occasionally a short haired puppy among the litter. This is due to a recessive gene. These short haired pups have the same temperament as the long hairs and still make excellent pets.

Temperament

These are very loving dogs. They are affectionate, friendly and loyal. Nothing could please them more than to sit contently in your lap. Unlike many toy species, these dogs are great with small children. Their temperament is very stable, even with children so that they make perfect playmates for your family.

Living Arrangements

The Havanese is a small dog, and is suited for living indoors, in apartments or city type housing. Even though it does enjoy indoor living and is very easily potty trained, it does require daily exercise. Being small it is very energetic and loves to play.

The Havanese dogs live to an average age of about fourteen years. If your idea of a small friendly bundle of fur is an ideal dog, this could be the dog of choice for you, and will give you years of enjoyment.
