There are many different variations of this type of afghan which may be worked as white on red or red on white. One of the most common variations is a separately crocheted flower which is attached on top of a square. Free patterns for many different styles are available online.
Poinsettia Flower
With yellow, chain4, join with slip stitch to form ring. Chain 3 (counts as double crochet) and work 3 double crochet in ring. Drop loop from hook and insert hook in the top of the first chain three. Pick up loop and draw yarn through two loops. Chain 14 double crochet in ring, drop loop from hook, insert hook in first double crochet, pick up dropped loop and draw yarn through two (popcorn stitch made). Make two more popcorn stitches in ring and slip stitch to top of beginning chain 3.
Break off yellow.
Attach red in any chain one space and single crochet in same space, chain 4 (single crochet in next chain space ch4) around and join with slip stitch to beginning single crochet. Row 3 is chain1, work 2 single crochet in next chain 4 space, chain one, turn. On the next round work two single crochet in each single crochet, chain 1 turn. Next round work two single crochet in single crochet, single crochet in next two single crochet, 2 single crochet in last single crochet, chain one turn. Next round single crochet in 5 single crochet, chain one turn. Single crochet in next 4 single crochet, chain one turn. Single crochet in next 3 single crochet, chain one turn, single crochet in next two single crochet, chain 1 turn, skip 1st single crochet and slip stitch in 2nd single crochet. Break off. Repeat the petal rows in each chain 4 space.
Leaves
Work behind petals and join green in between petals, chain 1, single crochet in same space, chain 4 single crochet in next space between petals around (4 chain 4 spaces). Work leaves in chain 4 spaces the same as petals.
Poinsettia flowers may be attached to any contrasting color block or one piece afghan. Tack down centers and tips of leaves and petals to create a crochet poinsettia afghan. These pretty crochet flowers can also be used to decorate sweaters or sweatshirts for the Christmas season, or just hot glue a jewelry pin backing on a flowers and wear it as a buttonhole on jackets.
