French Music

French Music posts cover several different threads. Articles look at the medieval troubadour tradition from Occitania, the formal court music of Lully and Rameau, nineteenth-century opera from Bizet and Massenet, the Impressionist composers Debussy and Ravel, the chanson tradition of Edith Piaf, Charles Aznavour and Jacques Brel, the yeye pop of the 1960s, and the more recent electronic scene around Daft Punk, Air and Justice. There are also short notes on the rap and hip hop coming out of the Paris suburbs and on the small but stubborn jazz manouche scene that traces back to Django Reinhardt.
