If you had not heard of Evangelina Carrozo before May 2006 then don’t worry. Not many people did. The carnival queen from Argentina burst on to our screens and newspapers when she made a stunning protest at a summit on 12th May 2006 held in Vienna.
The summit was being held for the heads of states of European Union, Latin American and Caribbean named “IV Summit of the European Union, Latin America and the Caribbean”. Evangelina Carrozo managed to hide among photographers and during a photo shoot appeared wearing only a bikini. The carnival queen, and now Greenpeace activist, from Argentina was protesting the construction of two wood pulp plants that are being built in Uruguay near a river border with Argentina.
“We told the Uruguay government not to lie to the people. These pulp mills pollute,” she told the gathering before a security guard whisked her away. She was carrying a sign saying “No Pulp Mill Pollution.”
Two large pulp mills are being built for a total of $1.8 billion (1.42 billion euros).Construction of the plants has strained relations between Uruguay and Argentina. Earlier this month, Argentina announced it had filed a claim against Uruguay before the International Court of Justice at the Hague, arguing that Uruguay didn’t provide enough time for a thorough environmental impact study.
So what did the politicians think of the carnival queen? “She was very pretty and I blew her a kiss,” said Venezuela’s President Hugo Chavez. “It was one of the best things that have happened at this summit. I didn’t see anything about pulp, I was just looking at her.”
