U.S. Navy Ships from the Korean War Era included an extensive fleet of 4 battleships, 27 carriers, 13 cruisers, more than 80 destroyers and 12 destroyer escorts along with 4 Flagships and 13 Fleet Oilers and 8 Frigates.
This U.S. Navy fleet was provided support through 4 hospital ships and 6 landing ships or dock ports and 2 landing ships for personnel as well as 8 rocket launching and personnel based landing ships and finally tank landing ships, which numbered 27.
Apart from that there were more than three-dozen minesweepers in this navy fleet. The naval support units included the 1st Amphibious Construction Battalion ACB 1, different US Fleet Activities Navy based in Inchon and Pusan along with the Naval Beach Group One.
Korean War Era U.S. Navy Ships for Support
The fleet had three patrol craft escorts as well as three picket ships. To provide repair services 16 repair ships were incorporated to support U.S.Navy Ships in the Korean War Era. Ocean tugs USS Lipan ATF 85, USS Sarsi ATF 111, USS Takelma ATF 113 and USS Cocopa ATF 101 were indispensable during the operations in the Korean waters during the conflict. There were three underwater demolition teams specially organized for covert operations and these were termed 1st UDT, 3rd UDT and the 5th UDT.
Korean War Era U.S. Navy Ships Naval Surface Action and Services
The first United States naval surface action of the Korean War was made in 1950 when the ROK Navy patrol craft PC 701 managed to sink the North Korean steamer approximately 18 miles from Pusan along with its 600 North Korean troops.
In June the Navy and U.S. Air Force provided full support to prevent the invasion by North Korea of Formosa and authorized the Seventh Fleet to ensure this objective.
The USS Juneau (CLAA 119) destroyed targets on the shore in the region of Samchock in Korea making this the first massive gunfire support mission from the U.S. Navy Ships in the Korean War Era.
In 1950 the naval ships managed a complete blockade of the Korean Coastline and then extended it to the port cities of Wonsan and Chinnampo. Eventually the Reserve Fleet was also activated along with the lst Marine Brigade moving out from San Diego to assist with 6000 troops. The airplanes, which were carrier-based managed to destroy a lot of the Wonsan railroads, air fields, oil refineries and factories along with strategic targets in Hamhung, Hungham and Numpyong.
