Outdoor Activities in Thailand

Activities in Thailand

Thailand is a popular holiday destination for young backpackers, partly because of the multitude of outdoor adventure activities that can be done at a fraction of the cost in other countries.

Whether it’s swimming 30 meters below the sea or hiking high in the hills of northern Thailand, there are plenty of outdoor adventure options in Thailand. Below we’ve highlighted just a few of the most popular outdoor activities in Thailand.

Scuba diving in Thailand

Thailand has two main seas in which scuba diving can be done: The Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand.

The main diving centers from which to dive in the Andaman Sea are Phuket and Phi Phi Island. Both places have a multitude of diving schools where you can get your PADI diving certificate or just go on day trips or even liveaboard diving trips. The levels of professionalism are good with many expat European diving instructors working for most dive companies.

On the other side of mainland Thailand is the Gulf of Thailand with calmer waters and many beautiful reefs. The main diving centers here are Koh Samui and Koh Tao.

Snorkeling in Thailand

If you don’t like the prospect of having to get certified and strap a gas tank to your back, then snorkeling may be a better option for you. Anyone can go snorkeling as long as you can swim, yet you still get to see many of the same beautiful marine life and coral reefs that you would when diving.

Hiking in Thailand

Thailand has plenty of hilly terrain with dense greenery and jungle. The best place to go hiking in Thailand is in the north around Chiang Mai where the natural scenery is spectacular.  In addition to the scenery and wildlife you’ll have a chance to come into contact with the indigenous hill tribe people in the area which makes for an interesting cultural experience.

Rock climbing in Thailand

The rock climbing on Krabi Island situated in the south of Thailand is world renowned. Dozens of cliffs around Railay beach scatter the landscape each providing a unique rock climbing experience. Safety standards and equipment are generally good with lessons in rock climbing available to all.

A grueling climb up the cliff face is rewarded with spectacular sea views at the top. Be sure to take out travel insurance if you intend on doing any adventure sports and check if your insurance policy covers the activities you intend to do.
