In fact it is interesting to note that when Indian women enter the kitchen often they have to shower and no one wears shoes in this area. Cooking is considered a sacred art because it nourishes the body and soul.
Creating Good Workflow Zones in the Indian Kitchen
With the evolution of architectural principles Smart kitchen layouts have been created to utilize the working space in the best possible way. There are three strategic areas or work zones in the kitchen which are placed in a triangle layout for ease of access and good workflow.
These include the food storage area which can comprise of the pantry or the refrigerator, the food preparation and cooking area and lastly the workstation. This zone is called the working triangle and allows for easy movement and flow of people and things in this zone.
Designing an Efficient Indian Kitchen Interior
You can use different layouts to plan a kitchen according to your space requirements and the shape of the area which will be utilized for a kitchen.
If you have a small rectangle without any windows and doors you can easily create the workspace in a straight line instead of a triangular format in order to utilize the space to the maximum. In order to reduce walking space drastically you should place the sink in the center and refrigerator on the right side along with the pantry and keep the chopping station on the left of the sink.
A very efficient layout for the kitchen is a galley layout in which you have two work zones and one aisle in between. This will work for people who have to cook large amounts of food for a big family and perhaps require assistance from one of the family members. However, you must ensure that there is enough space for two people to move about. Apart from this it should be easy to open and close doors of the cabinets and refrigerator. However, if you do not have ample space then just leave some room for the refrigerator door to swing easily and use sliding doors on all the cabinet models.
Special Requirements for Indian Cooking
Traditionally Indian foods involve a lot of preparation and cooking time so it is best to have the kitchen which has a small seating area either on the floor or the countertop depending on the space. Most of the cooking is done on crock pots and takes a lot of time for the food to cook. Apart from this, since a lot of spices and vegetables are pungent there is always a distinct aroma in the kitchen. In order to avoid the smell of garlic, ginger and onions from permeating the entire house, do ensure that there is a good exhaust system to complement the Indian kitchen interiors.
