American Girl Elizabeth is an 18” doll that was introduced in August 2005. Produced by the American Girl company that makes a line of dolls and accessories depicting young, pre-teen girls from historic and contemporary periods, the doll’s full name is Elizabeth Cole. She represents a 10-year-old historical character from 1774 just before the American Revolution. Elizabeth was developed primarily as a best friend of American Girl Felicity.
The doll has long blonde hair with pin curls and lovely blue eyes. Elizabeth wears changeable ear rings. Elizabeth is a shy girl who has Loyalist leanings as opposed to Felicity’s Patriotic leanings during the American Revolution. Her story stresses loyalty, making choices and the beauty of friendship during the Revolutionary War era.
The Elizabeth doll is dressed in an authentic style from colonial times. Elizabeth wears a coral pink coloured tafetta gown trimmed with lace and adorned with pearly buttons. Underneath her gown, Elizabeth wears a cotton shift, shoes from the colonial period and a pair of long stockings. American Girl Elizabeth’s hair is tied up with a satin bow to showcase her pretty post earrings. The doll’s body is made from soft cloth and the movable head and limbs are vinyl.
Elizabeth’s story is told in the beautifully illustrated book ‘Very Funny, Elizabeth’ written by Valerie Tripp, detailing Elizabeth’s life and set in Williamsburg in 1775. It includes an essay titled ‘Looking Back’ which describes colonial life during the period of the American Revolution. The Elizabeth doll and book won several awards including the 2005 Parent’s Choice Approved Award and the 2005 National Parenting Publications (NAPPA) Honors Award.
American Girl Elizabeth has a variety of accessories ranging from clothes to jewellery. Elizabeth has a faux pearl choker and a fancy fan. Her bed is a four-poster, blue valanced, extravagant affair with soft blue pillows and embroidered sheets.
