American Girl Kirsten is an 18” doll that was one of the first three dolls introduced in 1986 by the founder of American Girl, Pleasant Rowland. The American Girl company produces a line of dolls and accessories depicting young, pre-teen girls from historic periods. The doll’s full name is Kirsten Larson. She is a 10-year-old historical character from 1854 and was developed to provide a young child’s perspective of events from this important period in American history.

The doll has long blonde hair that is braided and looped. She has a fringe commonly called a bang. Her skin is fair and she has crystal blue eyes. Kirsten is a Swedish immigrant to America. She lives in the Minnesota frontier with her family. Kirsten faces the hardships of the pioneer era with strength and spirit. She lives in a new country and has to face the challenge of a new and unfamiliar language.

American Girl Kirsten is dressed in an authentic pioneer era blue calico dress. The dress is printed with tiny flowers. It has a striped apron with a pocket. Kirsten wears striped stockings, black boots with laces and a pair of white cotton pantalettes. Her braided hair is tied with a blue ribbon. The doll’s body is made from soft cloth and the movable head and limbs are vinyl.

There are six beautifully illustrated books in the Kirsten series beginning with ‘Meet Kirsten’ that introduces young owners to the life of Kirsten growing up in the Minnesota prairie and life in 1854. Kirsten’s father, Papa, promises that America will be a land of opportunity and her Mama keeps Swedish traditions alive in the American frontier. Kirsten has three siblings: Lars, an older brother, Peter, a younger brother and Britta, a baby sister. Kirsten has a secret Indian friend called Singing Bird.

Origins of the Name Kirsten

Kirsten is a Scandinavian name meaning ‘follower of Christ’ or ‘the anointed one’. It’s English counterpart in Christine, which in turn is a derivative of Christian. Kirsten is a very popular baby first name, shared with the Hollywood actress Kirsten Dunst.
