Most of the fly fishing destinations in Argentina are in the Patagonia region. Rivers include the Rio Gallegos, the Rio Grande and the Futaleufu. Fish species are most commonly Atlantic salmon, brook, brown and rainbow trout and the season extends from November to the 31st of March. When winter blankets North America and Europe, Argentina enjoys its summer months and great fly fishing in its many rivers and streams.
Rio Manso Lodge
Located in the heart of Nahuel Huapi National Park, Rio Manso offers an outstanding fly fishing experience. Like many fly fishing lodges, the policy is one of catch and release to preserve the ecosystem of the area. There are rivers, streams and lakes which offer large brown, brook and rainbow trout. The lodge provides guides and offers other activities in the package including trail riding, hiking, birding and golf. Rates for fisherman are $645 USD per night and rates for non-fisherman are $395 per night. Meals are included in the price.
Kau Tapen Lodge
Kau Tapen Lodge is located in Tierra del Fuego on the banks of the Rio Grande. Noted for its large sea trout, the Rio Grande has two world records for fly fishing. The area resembles Wyoming in the United States or the Scottish flow country in Europe. Native wild life including guanacos, condors and red foxes are abundant. Among the amenities are two wading pools, a sauna, a steam bath and a massage room. The lodge is more fishing lodge than resort with comfortable accommodations and local cuisine. In the high season (January through April) the rates are $7250 per week.
Bella Vista Lodge
This lodge is located about halfway up the Rio Gallegos Valley which is the southern most river of size in Argentina. A fairly desolate area, it is at the edge of the subtropics. Wildlife includes rhea, flamenco, red and grey foxes, skunk and armadillo. There are also occasional sightings of condor and mountain lions. Brown and sea run trout are commonly caught by fly fishermen. During the high season weekly rates are $4960 per person. Cuisine is traditional local fare and wines are also included in the cost of accommodation.
Fishing vacations in Argentina are highly rated by those fortunate enough to have experienced them. They offer residents of the Northern Hemisphere the opportunity to practice their skills during the winter since December and January are high summer in Argentina. There are many other lodges and resorts which offer excellent accommodations and fly fishing and information is available from travel agents or the internet.
