Nassau, the capital city of the Bahamas, is the perfect holiday destination. Read on to find out more about what to do and how to get around in Nassau and the rest of the Bahamas.
When you go on vacation, it can be difficult to know how to get around. You will need to fly into Nassau as it is an island, so you cannot bring your own car on vacation with you. Hiring a car is always an option, but driving in the Bahamas can be a challenge for Americans because in the Bahamas, cars drive on the left side of the road. The best option to get around Nassau is with the local Jitney buses – a cheap and reliable form of transport.
What is a Jitney?
Jitney buses are medium sized buses that the locals use to get around the island. There are a number of Jitney buses that travel around Nassau, and you can get pretty much wherever you need to go using a Jitney. Best of all, bus fares are incredible cheap, with most routes being only $1 per trip.
Popular Number 10
The most popular Jitney route is bus number 10, which some have called the cheapest tourist attraction in Nassau. For a bus fare of just $1.25 for adults and $1 for children, you can go on a scenic tour of Nassau. The number 10 route travels from downtown Nassau to Cable Beach, one of the best beaches in the world. The route travels along the Western Esplanade and passes the popular tourist attractions of Ardastra Gardens, Fort Charlotte, Arawak Cay’s Fish Fry and past all of the popular Cable Beach resorts including the Wyndham Hotel, Sheraton Hotel and Sandals Resort. You are able to jump off the Jitney anywhere along the route. Make sure that you have change on you to pay your fare, as the bus driver will only accept exact change.
As well as asking the Jitney to stop anywhere along its route, you can also flag the Jitney down by standing outside your hotel or restaurant and waving as the bus comes past. If you would like to take the entire #10 route, then hop onto the Jitney at its first stop which is situated across the road from the Bay Street entrance to the Straw Market, just in front of McDonalds. The Jitneys run every few minutes, seven days a week, from 6am to 6.30pm. Unfortunately, the Jitneys cannot go over the Paradise Island bridge, so to get to Paradise Island you will need to take a taxi or a private ferry boat.
