To prepare Dutch oven French toast gather the following ingredients.

  • 1 dozen eggs
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 tablespoon cinnamon
  • 1 loaf of sliced French bread
  • ½ pound butter
  • 2 ½ cups brown sugar
  • 2 cans peaches (optional)

To prepare this dish you need to have a 14 inch Dutch oven and a medium sized mixing bowl. Preheat the Dutch oven for 15 minutes using 21 coals on the top of the oven and 11 briquettes under. While the oven warms, beat together milk, eggs, cinnamon and vanilla in a medium sized bowl.

  • Place the bread slices in the egg mixture and allow them to soak well.
  • Next, move the oven away from the bottom coals. Remove the lid.

Once the oven is heated, melt the butter, and then blend brown sugar in the butter. As soon as the colour of the sugar butter turns light brown, drain the peaches in the prepared caramel.

When the slices are well soaked, spread the peaches on top. Place the lids over the oven and place the oven back on the coals. Finally bake for thirty to forty five minutes, changing the coals if necessary. Repeatedly check to ensure that the bread mixture doesn’t burn.

The following recipe serves between ten to twelve persons. It is suited for those with some experience in baking and cooking. So only try this recipe if you are ready for a challenging day in the kitchen and have the necessary skills.
