History of Lille
Lille was one of the first cities in France to become industrialized in the 19th century and since then has been an important manufacturing base in France, although the textile mills for which it was once famous are now long gone.

The Museum of Modern Art, which is located a short distance away from the town centre, has an extensive collection of art from the 20th century as well as a significant amount of highly contemporary artworks by French artists.
