Longano is a municipality located in the province of Isernia. This entire region is part of the Molise territory of Italy. The exact location of Longano places it at a 35 km distance westwards of Campobasso. At the same time it falls at a distance of about 9 km towards the South of Isernia.
The last known census was conducted in Longano in December 2004. According to the statistics obtained from the survey, the total population of the area was 720. The total area that is regarded as being Longano is just 27.1 km².
Longano is a landlocked municipality with a number of different municipalities bordering it on each side. Amongst the neighboring municipalities of Longano are Gallo Matese, Castelpizzuto, Monteroduni, Isernia, Roccamandolfi, Pettoranello del Molise and Sant’Agap.
Although Longano is a relatively small center with regards to its size, it has a history that goes back to the early medieval period. The region is dotted with historical ruins amongst which some of the ancient walls depict the architectural style of the early medieval period. The Mura Saracene walls in particular display early medieval aesthetics side of the structure.
The first mention of Longano in written historical records dates back to the year 1269. This is much later than what most historians have stated. It was in the year 1269 that the region of Langano was presented to the Bertrando Bucca as fiefdom by the Anjous. By the 14th century Longano once again exchanged hands and this time it went to the Capuani family.
Over the passage of time the ownership of Longano went from one family to another out of which the prominent families are the Gaetani, the Evoli, the Ruffo and the Spinelli families.
During the 17th century Longano came under the Vigliena. According to the historical records the De Filippis-Delfico families were the last feudal lords of Longano.
Longano is located at an altitude of 700 m above sea level. It is a hilly territory which has a very scanty population. The patron saint of the people of Longano is San Antonio and the most important religious festival is celebrated on 13 June in the region. Other important religious festivals include the Frazioni, Localita and Trignete.
Today Longano attracts a large number of tourists from across the world. History buffs in particular are quite intrigued by the medieval structures that are still standing in the region. Amongst these sites to see in Longano, is a medieval castle and a number of historical ruins.
The last week of July is generally the most festive season for the people of Longano. This is the time when they celebrate the feast of the emigrants and you will find the entire population of the region to get together in commemoration of this event each year. Over the passage of time Longano is one place in Italy that has managed to retain its culture which is thriving till today.
