The Prado Museum is one of the largest art museums in Spain with major collections of Spanish, French, Italian and German art spanning centuries. In addition to thousands of painting the Prado Museum in Madrid is also home to more than 700 works of Sculpture by various artists.
In total there are approximately 9,000 paintings; however, due to lack of size in the museum building only a fraction of these paintings can be exhibited to the public at any one time. Nevertheless the Prado Museum has enough on display to satisfy even the hungriest of artistic appetites. A significant proportion of the Spanish paintings housed in the Prado Museum originally belonged to the Spanish Royal Family until being donated to the museum.
Getting to the Prado Museum Madrid
The Prado Museum is centrally located in the city of Madrid and as one of the cities major attractions is very easy to find. The Museum is located at 23 Ruiz de Alarcon. If coming to the Prado Museum by metro then the nearest stations are Atocha and Banco de Espana, both of which are within walking distance of the Museum. The nearest railway station is Atocha, from which directions to the Prado Museum are signposted. Madrid bus routes that stop close to the Prado museum are Lines 9, 10, 14, 19, 27, 34, 37 and 45
Prado Museum Madrid Opening Times
The Prado Museum is closed on Mondays. From Tuesday to Sunday the Museum opening hours are from 9am to 8pm. The Museum is closed on Christmas Day, New Years Day, May Day and Easter Friday.
Prado Museum Ticket Prices
The price of a standard entrance ticket to the Prado Museum that allows access to permanent exhibitions is 6 Euros. Students under 25 can get in for 3 Euros while under 18’s go free. Entrance is free to everyone at the Prado Museum on Sundays between 9am and 7pm. In addition there are four special days in Spain on which free entrance to the Prado Museum is also granted. These are: 2 May (Official Day, Region of Madrid), 18 May (International Museums Day), 12 October (Hispanidad Day), 6 December (Constitution Day)
