Big Bear Lake
Big Bear Lake sits in the San Bernardino Mountains at around 6,750 feet, a two-hour drive from Los Angeles depending on the Inland Empire traffic. Articles cover the two main ski resorts, summer fishing for trout and bass in the lake itself, mountain biking on the Snow Summit downhill trails, and the small village shopping district. There are practical notes on chain control on Highway 18, the altitude effect on people coming up from sea level, and how cabin rentals differ between the north shore and the south shore. The lake is artificial, dammed in 1884.
